Many Facebook users sooner or later come to the point of no longer knowing all the people that they call 'friends'. They might have approved them thinking they know them through mutual friends only to realize that they don't really know them. Do you want to keep them or not? How do you get rid of certain friends and will they realize?

Let's face it: Your Facebook friends are not necessarily your real life friends. 'Friends' in Facebook terms just means your 'connections'. Some users collect as many as they can to get their messages (status updates) out to as many people as possible. Others strictly only approve people they personally know. Where do you want to draw the line?

When you receive a request and you are not sure whether you know them or not you have one of the following options to find out more: A. Check out your mutual friends (by clicking on the link saying '1 mutual friend' beneath their name in the request list), B. Check out their profile (by clicking either on their profile picture or their name) or C. Send them a personal message asking them (by visiting their profile and use the 'Send a message' link on the right side).

Nothing. If you don't approve them they just remain as your open 'friend request'. You will see a number appear near the friends symbol in the navigation bar of your Facebook page, next to the Facebook logo, when a new friend asked to be friend. When you click on it you see the entire group of not yet approved friends.

If you click on the button that says 'Not Now' you will see this message next to their name: Request hidden. Take action later on the 'Requests Page'. Don't know... (the person's name)?

If you click on the 'Requests Page' link you will see all the friends you haven't yet approved or deleted. You can then click on 'Delete Request' and it will disappear from any list. If you click on the 'Don't know this person' link they will no longer be able to send you any more friend requests.

If you have connections that you don't mind as friends but prefer not to get their updates appearing in your news feed you can click on the little 'x' appearing in the right top corner in one of their posts. You will see three options: Hide this post, hide all by... and Mark as spam. If you want to remove all of this person's updates, click on 'hide all by...'

No, they won't but you will be removed from their friend list as well. You can easily do this by navigating to their profile page and click 'unfriend' on the bottom of the left column.
